Opera in Istanbul

As well as its many famous sights, Istanbul also has a quaint little opera house offering the standard operatic and ballet repertoire as well as works by Turkish composers. Istanbul might not be the most obvious city to associate with opera and certainly few internationally famous singers can be heard there but it is interesting to see what will be made of the great operas by a predominantly Islamic city which is partly within Asia. A visit by Operas Abroad to Istanbul included The Merry Widow which received an interesting, stylish and spirited performance.

The new programme is an interesting one, the company clearly does not rely too heavily on established classics to draw in its audience. There are the well-known ballets but they will also present modern ballets, dance and opera.

The opera house itself is a charming little theatre, decorated in a variety of styles; it manages to be opulent, quaint, eccentric and Turkish all at the same time. Its carpets are decorated with treble clef motifs. Young people in Istanbul attend the opera house in substantial numbers and the average age of an audience at the Istanbul Opera House must be about twenty years younger than that at the Royal Opera House or La Scala.

We usually choose hotels which are close to the opera house but in the case of Istanbul this has not been arranged. The theatre is on the eastern side of the river and although it is in the pleasant area of Kadikoy, it is some distance from the main sights of the city. There are many good restaurants and shops near to the opera house so it is a good idea to set off for the opera very early and have a good meal there before the performance.
